The air in the Royal Conservatory was thick with the scent of exotic blooms and the even more potent perfume of my own anxiety. Sunlight, filtered through the stained-glass ceiling, cast kaleidoscopic patterns on the polished marble floor, a stark contrast to the somber mood that had settled over the palace since the Queen’s disastrous unveiling. Queen Aurelia, bless her dramatic heart, was still in a state of profound, theatrical grief, confined to her chambers with a specially brewed chamomile tea and a decree that no one mention the word ‘bloom’ within earshot. As her lady-in-waiting, and now, whether I liked it or not, the palace’s amateur detective, this left me to navigate the treacherous waters of horticultural intrigue.

My current quarry was Elara Meadowlight, the Queen’s professional rival, a woman whose smile was as sharp as a freshly honed trowel. We were ostensibly discussing the general upkeep of the royal gardens, a conversation as dry as over-watered soil, but my mind was a whirlwind of possibilities, each more improbable than the last. Was Elara the architect of this horticultural tragedy? Did the whispers of a curse hold any water, or was this something far more mundane, yet infinitely more sinister?

“The phalaenopsis orchids are looking particularly vibrant this season, Isolde,” Elara said, her voice smooth as velvet, her eyes scanning a nearby display of delicate, butterfly-like flowers. She gestured with a perfectly manicured finger. “A testament to diligent care, wouldn’t you agree?”
