Mama Jay, with her witchly senses, may begin to detect a dark presence around Xai, a subtle corruption that worries her deeply. However, Dan’s influence is so insidious, so veiled, that even her powers might struggle to pinpoint the exact source or nature of the threat, especially if Dan is adept at masking his presence. The chapter will focus on Xai’s internal struggle and his unwitting manipulation by Dan. Xai felt it most acutely. He was the keeper of normalcy, the younger brother left behind to hold the frayed edges of their home. His mother, Mama Jay, her gnarled hands still capable of weaving spells that soothed the land’s lingering tremors, watched him with an unnerving intensity. Her eyes, ancient and knowing, seemed to pierce through his forced smiles, to see the gnawing worry that ate at his insides. He tried to be strong, for her, for their king, for the memory of Jonaka’s unwavering optimism. He helped organize supplies, he listened patiently to the worried murmurs of townsfolk, he even managed a few jokes that earned him weary, grateful smiles. But the laughter felt thin, brittle, like ice on the verge of cracking.
It was in these moments of solitude, when the weight of responsibility pressed down too heavily, that the whispers began. They didn't come from the wind, or the rustling leaves, or even the hushed conversations of the court. They came from within, a subtle shift in his own thoughts, a new perspective blooming like a dark flower.
