The River of Silver

Nova and Pip follow the glowing leaf through the shadowy woods, searching for the river of silver from Nova’s vision. Along the way, Nova’s uncertainty grows, but the leaf’s gentle pull and Pip’s encouragement keep her moving forward. When they finally reach the shimmering river, Nova faces a test of trust as she steps into its magical waters to find the hidden door, and the river reveals a message meant only for her. The chapter ends with the door just beginning to open, inviting Nova and Pip into the unknown.

The moonstone leaf tugged at my palm, always pointing west, as if it had somewhere it wanted to be and I was just along for the ride. The woods grew stranger with every step. The trees were closer here, their roots curling above the moss. Odd flowers blinked open to watch us go by, and the hush was so deep I could hear my own breath. Somewhere ahead, water chattered quietly, a promise in the darkness.

Pip padded at my side, his tail flicking as he dodged patches of nettles. "You’re awfully quiet," he said after a while, tilting his head. "Not having second thoughts, are you?"

I looked down at the leaf, still glowing soft as a firefly. "What if we get lost? Or what if the river doesn’t even exist? What if this is all a wild goose chase?"

"Nova," Pip said, stopping so suddenly I almost tripped over him, "the woods don’t wake up for just anyone. That leaf chose you. So did the moonstone. Besides, I’ve never seen a goose in these woods. Maybe a duck once." He grinned, and it made the knot in my stomach loosen just a little.

The sound of water grew stronger. My heart picked up. The leaf’s glow brightened until it shone like a tiny piece of moonlight in my hand. We pushed through a final curtain of willow branches, and there it was: the river of silver.

It wasn’t like any river I’d seen before. The water was clear but laced with shining silver threads, swirling and dancing atop each wave. It hummed with a music I felt more than heard, and the whole air shimmered like sun on glass.

Pip’s eyes went wide. “Would you look at that. Not every day the old rivers show themselves.”

I moved closer, the leaf pulsing in my palm. My reflection stared back from the water, but it was… different. Brighter. There was a gentle voice in the ripple, almost like the moonstone itself, whispering, “Trust.”

I hesitated at the edge. “The door is supposed to be here?”

“Doors come in all shapes,” Pip said, nudging me forward. “Sometimes you have to step into the story to find the next page.”

Swallowing hard, I dipped my toes in. The river was cool and tingly, as if every drop remembered something important. The silver danced up around my ankles, then slid away, leaving a path of light under the water.

I took another step, clutching the leaf. Suddenly, a stone glowed beneath the surface—etched with the same spirals I’d seen on Elder Willow’s bark. The water around it stilled, and the spirals shimmered, forming words only I could make out:

"Blood of Isolde, Keeper of Light,

Where roots entwine and moonbeams gleam,

Speak the name that calls you home—

And open the dreaming door."

Pip looked at me, eyes shining. “Well? Got a name worth trying?”

My heart hammered. I squeezed the leaf and whispered, “Nova.”

The stone brightened, and the river parted, revealing a small arched door set into the hillside beyond. Its surface rippled like water, waiting. The leaf in my hand burned bright and steady, pointing the way.

I glanced back at Pip, who nodded. “Go on, Nova. This is your story.”

As I stepped toward the door, the silver river hummed louder, and the world seemed to lean in, holding its breath. The door began to open—and I had no idea what waited on the other side.
