The forest, once a comforting veil of emerald and shadow, now felt like a suffocating shroud. Every rustle of leaves, every snap of a twig, sent a jolt of adrenaline through Elara. Kael, ever watchful, moved with a predator’s silent grace, his hand never far from the hilt of his scarred sword. They had been traveling for days since escaping the illusion-laden woods, the air thick with the unspoken tension that always seemed to cling to Kael like the damp earth.
“Are we close?” Elara whispered, her voice raspy from disuse and the gnawing fear. The moon, a sliver of silver against the bruised twilight sky, offered little comfort. Its cool light, usually a source of nascent power within her, felt distant, almost mocking.
Kael grunted, his gaze fixed on the path ahead. “Close to what? More trouble? Almost certainly.” His cynicism was a well-worn cloak, but beneath it, Elara sensed a current of something else – a weariness that went deeper than mere physical exhaustion.
