The wind, a relentless sculptor, had carved the jagged peaks of the Serpent’s Tooth mountains into a panorama of desolate beauty. Elara huddled deeper into Kael’s worn cloak, the roughspun wool a meager defense against the biting air. Below them, the valley was a smear of bruised twilight, the last vestiges of the sun bleeding into the horizon. They had been traveling for days, each step a testament to their desperate flight. The village, her home, felt like a dream now, a fragile memory of warmth and safety shattered by the cold, unyielding pursuit.
"Are we there yet?" Elara’s voice was a small, reedy sound, swallowed by the vastness. She hated the question, hated the childishness of it, but the gnawing fear in her belly made it slip out.
Kael didn’t turn. His gaze was fixed on the darkening landscape, his hand resting on the pommel of his sword, a constant, reassuring weight that was also a stark reminder of the danger they were in. "We are where we need to be, child. For now." His voice was a low rumble, rough as the stones beneath their boots.
