The air in the cramped alleyway hung thick with the stench of refuse and desperation. Elara, no older than sixteen, pressed herself against the cold, damp brick, her heart hammering a frantic rhythm against her ribs. Behind her, the sounds of pursuit – heavy boots, gruff shouts – echoed closer. She’d been careless, lingering too long at the market, her mind lost in the swirl of colours and scents, forgetting the shadows that had begun to lengthen even before dusk. They were the ones from the Whispering Cloaks, their movements too silent, their eyes too sharp.

A rough hand clamped onto her shoulder, spinning her around. Elara gasped, bracing for a blow, but instead found herself face-to-face with a man whose scowl seemed etched into his very soul. His armour was battered, bearing the marks of countless battles, but it was the weariness in his eyes, the cynical twist of his lips, that truly spoke of a life lived hard. He was all sharp angles and brooding silence, a stark contrast to the villagers she knew.

“Well, well,” the man grunted, his voice a low rumble. “What have we here? A stray kitten playing in the gutters.” His gaze swept over her torn dress, her wide, frightened eyes. “You’re a long way from your basket, little one.”
