The biting wind whipped Elara’s cloak around her, a flimsy shield against the unforgiving chill of the mountain pass. Beside her, Kael moved with a grim, unyielding resolve, his gaze fixed on the jagged peaks ahead. The silence between them was a heavy shroud, woven with unspoken truths and the raw ache of betrayal. Lyra’s words, a venomous whisper that had fractured their fragile trust, still echoed in Elara’s mind. The prophecy, twisted and weaponized, had laid bare Kael’s deepest wound.
He stopped, his broad back a wall against the gale, and finally turned to face her. The moonlight, a sliver of silver in the bruised twilight sky, caught the hard lines of his face, deepening the shadows beneath his eyes. They were no longer the eyes of a reluctant protector, but of a man wrestling with ghosts.
“She told you,” he stated, his voice a low rumble, devoid of its usual gruffness. It was a confession, not a question.
