The air in the hidden grove had been thick with the scent of pine and the hushed promise of sanctuary. Elara, her breath still catching from their desperate flight, leaned against the rough bark of an ancient oak, her eyes scanning the impenetrable wall of trees that surrounded them. Kael, his movements economical and sharp even in his exhaustion, tended to a shallow wound on his arm, his brow furrowed in a way that spoke of more than just physical pain. They had escaped the mountain pass, evaded the hounds of the Shadow Weaver, but the victory felt hollow, a fragile pause in an unending chase.

"We're safe, for now," Elara whispered, the words tasting like ash. The relief she’d expected to feel was absent, replaced by a gnawing unease that had settled deep in her bones since they’d fled the ruins of Oakhaven. The memory of the Shadow Weaver’s chilling voice, echoing through the shattered remnants of her home, was a phantom limb, a constant ache.

Kael grunted, his gaze fixed on the crude bandage he was fashioning. "Safety is a fleeting luxury, girl. Especially for us." His voice was rough, stripped of any comfort. He always spoke of danger, of the inevitable pursuit, but tonight, it felt heavier, tinged with a weariness that went beyond the physical.
