Alex's initial leadership falters as his childhood fear of the dark and being alone resurfaces. He feels the weight of responsibility for his friends' safety, a burden amplified by the encroaching dread.
The silence that had descended upon us after Robin’s hushed pronouncement was heavier than any fog. It wasn’t the natural quiet of a forest settling down for the night; it was a waiting silence, a pregnant pause before something terrible. My gaze flickered from Robin, her face pale in the dim light filtering through the grimy windowpane, to Mark, his usual bravado replaced by a tight-lipped tension, and then to Chloe, her eyes wide and fixed on the crude symbols scrawled on the lodge wall.
And then there was me. Alex. The leader. The one who’d planned this whole trip, who’d assured everyone it would be the adventure of a lifetime. Now, standing in this rotting husk of a place, with the scent of damp earth and something else… something metallic and ancient, clinging to the air, I felt my carefully constructed courage begin to crumble.
It was the dark, of course. It always was. Ever since that night when I was six, when I’d woken up to find my bedroom window wide open, the moonlight casting long, skeletal shadows across the floor, and the distinct, chilling feeling that I wasn’t alone. I’d screamed, and my parents had rushed in, but the memory, the visceral terror of that unseen presence, had never truly left me. It burrowed deep, a tiny, persistent knot of fear that tightened with every deepening shadow.
