The air inside the hunter’s lodge was thick with the scent of decay and something else, something acrid and ancient, like old blood mixed with damp earth. It clung to our clothes, to our hair, and, I suspected, to our very souls. Chloe, ever the pragmatist, was already fumbling with her phone, the weak beam of its flashlight cutting through the oppressive gloom. Mark, his usual boisterous energy subdued, stood near the entrance, his shoulders hunched as if expecting a blow. I, caught between a primal urge to flee and an insatiable curiosity, found myself drawn deeper into the cabin’s decaying heart.

The walls were a tapestry of grime and shadow, but as Chloe’s light swept across them, we saw them. Carvings. Not the crude drawings of hunters boasting of their kills, but something far older, far more disturbing. Jagged lines, twisted spirals, and figures that seemed to writhe and contort in the flickering light. They were etched deep into the rough-hewn logs, as if the wood itself had been tormented into bearing witness.

“What is this?” Chloe’s voice was a hushed whisper, barely audible above the thumping of my own heart. Her flashlight beam trembled, illuminating a particularly gruesome depiction of a creature with too many limbs and a gaping maw. It looked less like an animal and more like a nightmare made manifest.
