Echoes of the Lost
Strange, disembodied whispers seem to weave through the mist, just beyond the range of clear hearing. The friends exchange fearful glances, the playful adventure now a chilling nightmare.
The fog was a living thing, a suffocating blanket that had swallowed the world whole. It clung to us, damp and cold, each breath a chilling reminder of how truly lost we were. The playful thrill of exploration had curdled into a gnawing dread, a knot of fear tightening in my stomach with every passing minute. Mark, usually so quick with a joke, had gone quiet, his jaw set, his eyes darting around the impenetrable white. Robin, her artistic sensitivity usually a source of comfort, now seemed brittle, her fingers tracing the worn edges of her locket almost obsessively.
"Did you hear that?" Robin’s voice was a thin thread, barely audible above the muffled silence.
Mark and I froze, straining our ears. At first, there was nothing but the soft, persistent drip of condensation from unseen branches. Then, it came again. A whisper, like dry leaves skittering across stone, but with a cadence that was unnervingly human. It was just at the edge of hearing, a phantom sound that prickled the hairs on the back of my neck.
