The breath I drew in was ragged, tasting of pine needles and something else, something sharp and metallic, like old blood. Behind me, a sound, a low guttural growl that vibrated through the soles of my worn hiking boots, confirmed our worst fears. It wasn't just a feeling anymore; it was a tangible presence, a hunter that had finally revealed itself from the deepening shadows. "Run!" Mark’s voice, usually laced with a playful edge, was a raw, desperate shout.

We didn’t need telling twice. My legs, which had felt heavy and sluggish moments before, suddenly found a surge of adrenaline. Branches whipped at my face, tearing at my clothes, but I barely registered the sting. All that mattered was the blur of green and brown rushing past, the frantic thumping of my heart against my ribs, and the chilling certainty that whatever was behind us was gaining.

Robin, usually so composed, was stumbling, her long braid whipping behind her like a panicked flag. I risked a glance back. She was falling, her arms flailing. Without thinking, I veered sharply, grabbing her arm with a strength I didn't know I possessed. "Come on, Robin! Don't stop!" I pulled her forward, her weight a sudden, terrifying anchor.
