Sounds in the Dark

Night falls, amplifying the forest's terrifying sounds. Snapping twigs, guttural growls, and the sensation of rapid movement just beyond their sight push their frayed nerves to the breaking point.

The sun, a bruised orange smudge against the deepening indigo sky, was sinking fast. We’d been walking for hours, the forest floor a carpet of damp leaves that muffled our footsteps, but did little to silence the growing unease in my gut. The fog, which had swallowed us whole hours ago, had thinned into an oppressive, clammy shroud that clung to the trees, distorting their familiar shapes into monstrous, reaching claws. Every snap of a twig, every rustle of unseen movement, felt amplified, a drumbeat against the frantic rhythm of my own heart.

"Are you sure about this, Alex?" Mark’s voice, usually laced with a playful jab, was tight, strained. He kept glancing over his shoulder, his athletic frame tensed as if ready to bolt. His skepticism, so comforting just yesterday, now felt like a fragile shield against a reality that was rapidly proving itself to be far more terrifying than he could have imagined.

Robin, beside him, was unnervingly still. Her eyes, usually so bright and observant, were wide, darting from shadow to shadow. She clutched her worn locket, her thumb tracing its smooth, cool surface. "It's getting dark," she said, her voice barely a whisper, as if speaking too loudly might alert whatever was out there. "And the sounds… they’re getting closer."
