The First Glimpse

As they commit to a path, a fleeting, terrifying glimpse of something large and unnatural moves through the trees. The hunt has officially begun, and they are the prey.

The decision hung heavy in the air, a tangible thing woven from the musty scent of the lodge and the rising tide of our fear. The map, a crude thing of charcoal and desperation, lay spread between us, its lines a spiderweb of potential doom. Mark’s finger, usually so steady, trembled as it traced the dashed route. “This way,” he’d said, his voice tight, “it’s the only way that doesn’t lead straight into… whatever *that* is.” He gestured vaguely towards the edges of the map, where the charcoal had bled into dark, menacing smudges.

Robin, her eyes wide and fixed on the same spot, clutched her locket so tightly I could see the imprint of the worn metal against her palm. "The stories my grandmother told," she whispered, her voice barely audible above the rustling of unseen things outside, "they always spoke of a place where the trees themselves were alive, that they watched and waited."

I swallowed, the dryness in my throat a stark contrast to the prickle of sweat on my brow. The hunter’s lodge, with its disturbing carvings and the lingering, unsettling aura, had been bad enough. But leaving it, venturing back into the fog-choked woods, felt like stepping from one nightmare into another. Yet, the map offered a sliver of hope, a promise of escape, however perilous.
