The Choice: Known or Unknown
Faced with the map, the friends must decide: brave the known dangers of the fog-shrouded woods or risk the uncertain perils hinted at by the map's cryptic markings.
The musty air of the hunter’s lodge clung to us like a second skin, a thick, cloying blanket woven from dust and decay. The crudely drawn map, spread out on the splintered table, seemed to pulse with a faint, malevolent energy under the weak beam of my flashlight. Robin’s fingers, usually so steady when sketching, trembled as she traced a jagged line with her index finger.
“This… this is supposed to be a way out,” she murmured, her voice barely a whisper, swallowed by the oppressive silence. “But look.” She pointed to a series of symbols scrawled near the end of the line, symbols that made my stomach clench with a primal dread. They were rough, angular, and seemed to writhe in the periphery of my vision. “What do you think these mean?”
Mark, ever the pragmatist, leaned closer, his brow furrowed. “Probably just some old hunter’s doodles. Warnings about bears, maybe. Or just… weird stuff he saw.” He tried for a lighthearted tone, but it fell flat, brittle and unconvincing. He scratched at his head, his gaze flicking from the map to the shadowed corners of the lodge, as if expecting something to leap out at any moment.
