The air in the lodge was thick, not just with the dust of ages and the musty scent of decay, but with something else, something heavier. It clung to us, a damp blanket of dread that settled deeper with every passing second. Mark, always the first to crack a joke, the one who could find humor in a stubbed toe, was unusually quiet. His usual swagger had deflated, replaced by a tight line of his lips and a constant, almost frantic, scanning of the shadows pooling in the corners of the room.

“This is… this is a lot,” he finally managed, his voice sounding too loud in the suffocating silence. He ran a hand through his already messy hair, a nervous habit I knew well. “Like, a lot a lot. That map, Alex. What do you even think it means?”

I looked down at the brittle parchment again, spread out on a splintered table that looked like it had seen better centuries. The crude lines, the Xs, the unsettling symbols – they hummed with a dark energy, a silent promise of danger. Robin was tracing one of the more intricate markings with a fingertip, her brow furrowed in concentration.
