Beside him, Anya, her usual hardened gaze softened by a flicker of unease, sharpened a scavenged blade, the rhythmic scrape against whetstone a small, defiant sound against the encroaching dread.

Around them, the small band of allies they had managed to gather – a handful of disillusioned scholars, a few wary villagers who had seen too much to remain silent, and the enigmatic Oracle, her face a mask of ancient wisdom – moved with a quiet purpose. They were the embers of hope in a world teetering on the precipice, a fragile bulwark against the encroaching darkness. Yet, even in this haven, the weight of their impending confrontation pressed down, heavy and suffocating.

“They know we’re here,” Kaelen stated, his voice a low murmur that seemed to carry the resonance of the ancient texts he had devoted his life to deciphering. “The Syndicate’s reach is long. They will not allow this sanctuary to remain a threat.”
