Kaelen traced the intricate carvings on a shard of pottery, the rough surface a familiar comfort against his fingertips, yet tonight, it offered no solace. Anya, across the meager flames, meticulously sharpened a hunting knife, each scrape of steel against stone a sharp punctuation to their strained quiet.

"We can't keep going like this, Anya," Kaelen finally broke the silence, his voice raspy. He looked up, his gaze earnest, searching her face for a flicker of understanding, of the camaraderie that had once defined their uneasy alliance. "This… this division between us. It's a luxury we cannot afford."

Anya paused, the rhythm of her sharpening faltering. She didn't meet his eyes, her focus fixed on the glint of the blade. "Division?" she echoed, her tone flat, devoid of the spark that had animated her in their early encounters. "Or perhaps it's just reality setting in, Kaelen. You chase ghosts and whispers, and I… I try to keep us alive. They're not the same pursuit."
