Chapter 9
Encountering the Farmer
The farmer, working in his field, saw the Gingerbread Man. 'Well, I never!' he exclaimed, wiping his brow. 'A runaway cookie!' He chuckled, but the Gingerbread Man kept his distance.
The Gingerbread Man, with his raisin eyes twinkling and his candy-button smile, dashed past the last of the farm buildings. He could still hear the distant barks of the dog, a sound that sent a shiver of sugary excitement down his spine. He was free! Truly, wonderfully free! The air was crisp and smelled of freshly turned earth and something wild and exciting. He could see a vast, green field stretching out before him, dotted with golden haystacks and the occasional sturdy oak tree. This was the world! And it was all his to explore.
He ran with all his might, his little gingerbread legs a blur against the dewy grass. He hummed a little tune to himself, a jaunty melody that spoke of freedom and adventure. He imagined all the marvelous things he would see and do. Perhaps he would visit a bustling town, or climb the tallest mountain, or even sail on a great big ship! The possibilities were as endless as the sky above him.
Suddenly, a deep, rumbling voice startled him. "Well now, what have we here?"
