A Dog's Determined Bark
A playful dog, chasing butterflies, spotted the Gingerbread Man. 'Woof! A chase!' it barked, eager for a game. The Gingerbread Man dodged the wagging tail and kept running.
The sunbeams, like warm fingers, tickled the Gingerbread Man’s nose as he lay on the windowsill. He wiggled his gumdrop buttons, feeling the gentle breeze ruffle his icing smile. It was a glorious day! The world outside the kitchen window was a blur of greens and blues, with fluffy white clouds drifting lazily across the sky. He could hear the distant chirping of birds and the hum of bees in the clover patch. He felt so alive, so full of… well, gingerbread-y goodness!
Suddenly, a sound made him freeze. It was the Baker’s wife, her voice a soft melody, but the words made his sugary heart thump like a drum. “Oh, dear,” she sighed, “that Gingerbread Man is perfect! Just the right size for our afternoon tea.”
Perfect for tea? His icing eyes widened. That sounded suspiciously like… being eaten! He’d heard the whispers before, the hungry talk about ‘delicious’ and ‘a tasty treat’. He wasn’t a treat! He was a runner! A scamp! An adventurer!
