Chapter 5
The Cow's Curious Moo
Out in the meadow, a large cow noticed the speedy treat. 'Stop, little cookie!' she mooed, wanting a nibble. But the Gingerbread Man just laughed and ran faster.
The Gingerbread Man’s little legs, still warm from the oven, pumped like tiny pistons. He’d zipped past the rose bushes, dodged the grumpy cat, and even outrun a fluttery butterfly. The garden gate had swung open with a squeak, and now he was in it – the wide, green, wonderful world! A gentle breeze tickled his cinnamon-dusted nose, carrying the sweet scent of wildflowers. He felt a thrill bubble up inside him, a fizzy, happy feeling that made him want to skip. He was free! Free to run, free to see, free to be… well, whatever a gingerbread man was meant to be!
He bounded into a meadow, a vast expanse of emerald grass dotted with cheerful yellow buttercups and delicate white daisies. The sun warmed his chocolate-chip eyes, and he squinted happily. This was much better than being stuck on a windowsill, waiting to be gobbled up! He imagined himself running all the way to the sea, or perhaps to the top of the tallest mountain he could find. He could do anything!
Suddenly, a deep, rumbling sound filled the air. *Mooooo!* It was a sound so big, so full of bovine curiosity, that the Gingerbread Man skidded to a halt, his little legs nearly tangling beneath him. He looked up, and up, and up. Standing before him, munching contentedly on a clump of clover, was a cow. Not just any cow, but a truly enormous one, with kind, liquid brown eyes and a coat the color of creamy milk. She was the biggest creature he had ever seen, apart from perhaps the baker’s enormous oven.
