A Dangerous Perch

The fox swam further, his nose now barely above the water. 'Hold on tight to my nose!' he instructed, his eyes gleaming with a sudden, sharp hunger.

The Gingerbread Man, with his jaunty raisin eyes and a smile as bright as a new penny, clung to the fox’s nose. The rushing water swirled around them, a dizzying blur of brown and green. He felt a thrill, a mixture of fear and exhilaration. He was sailing across the widest river he had ever seen, all thanks to this clever fox! He puffed out his chest, feeling quite pleased with himself.

“Are we there yet?” he chirped, his voice a little wobbly against the roar of the current. He could feel the fox’s breath, warm and damp, tickling his gingerbread toes.

The fox, whose name was Ferdinand, let out a low chuckle. It rumbled in his chest, a sound that seemed to vibrate through the very water. “Almost, little one. Almost. Just a little further.” His tail, a magnificent plume of russet fur, swished back and forth, keeping him balanced. The Gingerbread Man watched it, mesmerized by its graceful movement. He imagined having such a tail, a glorious banner to wave as he ran.
