The Gingerbread Man’s little legs pumped like tiny pistons, carrying him away from the farmer’s booming voice and the frantic clucking of the hens. He’d outrun them all! The cow, the horse, the sheep, even the farmer himself, though that last one had been a bit too close for comfort. He felt a surge of pride, a warm glow that had nothing to do with the oven he’d once known. He was fast! He was clever! He was… about to be very, very wet.

Before him, the world opened up. Not into more fields or hedgerows, but into a wide, shimmering expanse of water. A river. It sparkled under the afternoon sun, its surface like a thousand tiny diamonds dancing. It looked beautiful, serene, and completely impassable. The Gingerbread Man skidded to a halt, his button eyes wide. He’d never seen so much water. He knew, with a sinking feeling that was colder than any river breeze, that he couldn't swim. His sturdy gingerbread body, though perfect for running, would become a soggy, crumbly mess in an instant.

And then he heard them. The familiar sounds of pursuit, closer this time, a chorus of hooves, paws, and determined footsteps. The farmer’s dog, with its deep, insistent bark, was leading the charge. The sheep, bleating with a newfound urgency, followed close behind. Even the farmer, huffing and puffing, was making his way towards the riverbank. They were all coming, and the river was the only thing between them and him. Panic, a prickly feeling, began to creep up his gingerbread neck. He needed a plan. And he needed it *now*.
