Chapter 19
A Promise Kept
Kaelen continues to show respect to his elders and the village traditions. He often visits his grandmother and helps care for the drums, ensuring their song of respect and good fortune never fades again.
Kaelen’s heart felt lighter than a bird’s feather these days. The heavy cloak of shame and misunderstanding that had once settled upon his shoulders had been replaced by a warm, bright feeling, like the sun breaking through clouds after a long rain. He walked through the village, his steps light and purposeful, no longer rushing past the elders with a mumbled greeting or a hurried nod. Instead, he paused, bowed his head slightly, and met their gazes with a genuine smile. Their smiles, in return, seemed to bloom a little brighter, their eyes crinkling with a warmth that mirrored his own.
His grandmother, Elara, was often the first person he sought out each morning. He’d find her tending to the sacred drums, her fingers tracing the worn carvings with a reverence that now made perfect sense to him. He’d sit beside her, not with the fidgety impatience of before, but with a quiet eagerness to learn. He’d help her dust the skins until they gleamed, polish the wooden rims until they shone like polished river stones, and arrange the ceremonial feathers with careful hands.
“These drums,” Elara would say, her voice a gentle rumble like distant thunder, “they are not just wood and skin, Kaelen. They are the voices of our ancestors, the heartbeat of our village, the keepers of our stories and our good fortune. They remember every song, every dance, every prayer offered with a true heart.”
