Chapter 14
The Drums Awaken
As Kaelen and Elara begin the ceremony together, a low hum starts from the drums. It grows louder, richer, and more joyous. The ancient instruments finally respond, their powerful sound filling the air.
The air thrummed with a quiet anticipation, a fragile hope that Kaelen clutched in his chest like a captured bird. Beside him, his grandmother Elara stood tall, her silver hair catching the dappled sunlight filtering through the ancient trees. Her hands, gnarled like the roots of an old baobab, rested gently on the largest of the drums, its surface polished smooth by generations of touch. Kaelen, his heart still a little fluttery from his apology, mirrored her stance, his own small hands placed gingerly on the drum’s flank. He remembered Elara’s words, her calm, steady voice teaching him the rhythm of respect, the deep, resonant beat that echoed not just in the heart of the drum, but in the heart of a village.
“Now, Kaelen,” Elara murmured, her voice a soft breeze carrying the scent of dry earth and sunshine. “Listen. Feel the drum as it feels you. It is not just wood and hide, but a spirit, ancient and wise. It listens to the heart.”
Kaelen took a deep breath, trying to quiet the restless energy that usually buzzed beneath his skin. He focused, not on the waiting villagers, or the worried eyes of Elder Maeve, but on the drum beneath his palms. He imagined its long life, the countless celebrations it had witnessed, the stories it held within its hollow depths. He thought of his grandmother’s gentle smile, the way her eyes crinkled when she was pleased, and a warmth spread through him, a different kind of warmth than the impatient fire that often ignited his actions. He felt a connection, a fragile thread weaving between him and the aged instrument.
