Elara watched her grandson from the shade of the baobab tree, her heart a mixture of weariness and a tiny, stubborn flicker of hope. Kaelen, usually a whirlwind of restless energy, was subdued. His shoulders were slumped, his gaze lowered, and the usual mischievous spark in his eyes had been replaced by a quiet, almost bewildered sadness. He wasn't running, wasn't chasing the iridescent dragonflies that danced over the wilting hibiscus flowers. He was just… still.

The village festival, meant to be a vibrant tapestry of music, dance, and laughter, felt muted. The air, usually thick with the scent of roasting plantains and the joyous thrum of anticipation, carried a faint whisper of disappointment. The drums, the very heart of their celebrations, remained silent, their polished surfaces reflecting the dulling sunlight like unseeing eyes. Elara felt the silence deep within her bones, a hollow ache that echoed the village's unspoken sorrow.

Kaelen finally stirred, his feet shuffling through the dry earth as he slowly made his way towards her. He stopped a few paces away, his hands clasped behind his back, a familiar gesture when he was trying to gather his thoughts, or perhaps, Elara mused, trying to find the right words.
