Chapter 10
Seeking Forgiveness
Kaelen approaches his grandmother, his head bowed. He sincerely apologizes for his disrespect and asks how he can help mend the situation. His voice trembles slightly, showing his newfound remorse and humility.
Kaelen’s feet felt heavy as he walked towards his grandmother’s hut, each step a reluctant echo of the shame that had settled in his heart. The vibrant colours of the village seemed muted, the laughter of children a distant, hollow sound. He clutched the small, smooth stone he’d found by the river, turning it over and over in his palm, a nervous habit he’d picked up. He remembered the booming laughter of the drums, how they used to fill the air with a joyous rhythm that made his feet want to dance. Now, silence. A heavy, suffocating silence that pressed down on the village like a storm cloud.
He reached the entrance of Elara’s hut, a place that usually felt warm and welcoming, filled with the scent of drying herbs and roasted maize. Today, it felt intimidating. He could hear the gentle hum of Elara’s voice from within, perhaps murmuring to the spirits of the ancestors, or perhaps just talking to herself. He took a deep breath, the air cool and carrying the faint, lingering scent of woodsmoke. He pushed aside the woven mat that served as a door and stepped inside.
Elara was sitting by the hearth, her back straight, her hands resting on her lap. Her silver hair was neatly braided, and her eyes, usually sparkling with warmth, held a quiet sadness. She looked up as Kaelen entered, and for a moment, Kaelen’s heart sank. He saw not anger, but a profound disappointment that felt worse than any scolding.
