The scent of aging paper and dust motes dancing in shafts of light was Clara’s sanctuary. It usually was. But today, the hushed reverence of the university archives felt charged with a different kind of energy, a hum of anticipation that vibrated just beneath her skin. Mr. Henderson, his fingers stained with ink and his spectacles perched precariously on his nose, had just dropped a bombshell.

“Dr. Reed,” he’d begun, his voice a low rumble, “was indeed a member of the Astrum Custodes. A rather… exclusive society, you see. Dedicated to the preservation of significant astronomical knowledge, particularly that which might be… misunderstood or exploited.”

Clara’s breath hitched. The Astrum Custodes. She’d stumbled across cryptic references in Evelyn’s journals, dismissed them as fanciful musings born of late nights and strong coffee. Now, Henderson’s words painted a picture far more tangible, far more significant. Evelyn wasn't just a brilliant astronomer; she was a guardian.
