Chapter 17
A Cosmic Gambit
Clara uses her knowledge of the celestial event to create a diversion, while Anya uses her tactical skills to outmaneuver Thorne's forces. Their combined efforts are key to their advantage.
The frigid night air bit at Clara’s cheeks as she scanned the inky expanse above. The Perseid meteor shower was reaching its zenith, a celestial ballet of incandescent streaks across the velvet black. It was a breathtaking spectacle, one that usually brought her a profound sense of peace. Tonight, however, the raw, untamed beauty of the cosmos was a mere backdrop to the frantic thrumming in her chest. Beside her, Anya stood with an unnerving stillness, her gaze fixed not on the heavens, but on the shadowed treeline bordering the observatory grounds. The stolen astrolabe, the one missing from its velvet-lined case at the estate, pulsed with a faint, almost imperceptible warmth against Clara’s hip, concealed beneath her thick coat. It was their bait, their desperate gamble.
"Are you sure about this, Clara?" Anya’s voice was a low murmur, barely audible above the rustling leaves. Her hand rested, ever so lightly, on the worn leather of her holster. The streetlights from the distant town cast long, distorted shadows, making the familiar landscape seem alien and menacing.
Clara nodded, her eyes never leaving the sky. "The shower's peak is in precisely seven minutes. That's when the atmospheric disturbance will be at its greatest. It's our best chance to mask any… unusual activity." She chose her words carefully, the scientific jargon a shield against the gnawing anxiety that threatened to consume her. Dr. Reed’s notes had been explicit: the artifact was a key, its alignment with specific celestial phenomena unlocking not just the location of the final clue, but also the means to access it. And Thorne, that ruthless collector of stolen histories, was undoubtedly aware of its significance. He wouldn’t let it slip through his fingers.
