Chapter 10
Stolen Starlight
The organization makes another move, stealing a crucial piece of Dr. Reed's research from Clara's lab. Anya uses her instincts to predict their next target, a rare astronomical map.
The chill of the predawn air did little to penetrate the practiced calm Clara maintained. Her lab, usually a sanctuary of ordered chaos, felt violated. The faint scent of ozone, a lingering ghost of the security system’s brief, futile alert, hung in the air. They had been thorough. Too thorough. The glass case that had housed the delicate, hand-drawn star charts – Dr. Reed’s personal annotations swirling like captured nebulae around the precise astronomical diagrams – was shattered. Not just paper and ink, but a tangible link to her mentor, a piece of Evelyn’s intricate mind laid bare. The ‘Stolen Starlight,’ as the cryptic note left behind had chillingly declared, was gone.
Anya Sharma stood by the doorway, her arms crossed, her gaze sweeping over the scene with a practiced, almost predatory stillness. Her usual sharp wit seemed muted, replaced by a grim focus that Clara had come to recognize, and to a degree, appreciate. “Anything else missing, Dr. Vance?” Her voice was low, devoid of its usual playful edge.
