Kareem watched Sadia across the dinner table, a familiar knot tightening in his chest. The roast chicken, painstakingly prepared, sat untouched on her plate. Her brow was furrowed, her lips pursed in that way that always signaled the arrival of a storm. He had tried. He had really, truly tried. He’d remembered the exact spice blend she’d raved about months ago, sourced the organic herbs from a specialty market, and even rehearsed the plating in his mind. Yet, here they were, the silence thick with unspoken criticism.
"It's... fine, Kareem," Sadia finally said, her voice lacking the warmth he craved. "Just a little... bland, wouldn't you say? Mama always adds a touch of lemon zest at the end. It really brightens the flavor."
He swallowed, the taste of his own disappointment bitter. "Oh. I'm sorry, habibti. I can get some lemon if you'd like."
