The scent of cardamom and rosewater, once a comforting balm, now hung in the air with a peculiar weight. Kareem watched Sadia across the dinner table, her laughter tinkling like distant bells as she recounted a story to her mother on the phone. Her eyes, bright and expressive, held the same sparkle that had first ensnared his heart, yet lately, he’d begun to see a flicker of something else within their depths – a relentless current of critique, a subtle, almost imperceptible turning of the world to revolve solely around her.

He remembered their early days, the whispered promises under the starlit sky, the solemn vows exchanged in the presence of Allah. Their marriage, a union blessed by faith and cemented by a love that felt both ancient and brand new, was meant to be a sanctuary. Kareem had poured himself into it, a willing devotee at the altar of Sadia’s happiness. He’d learned to anticipate her desires before she voiced them, to smooth away the slightest wrinkle in her perfect world. Her smiles, when they came, were like sunshine breaking through clouds, a rare and precious reward that fueled his devotion.

But the clouds, he’d come to realize, were becoming more frequent, and Sadia’s mother, Mrs. Hassan, was their perpetual architect. Her voice, a sharp, decisive instrument, seemed to echo in Sadia’s own pronouncements, a constant undercurrent of “this isn’t quite right,” or “you could have done better.” Kareem would find himself meticulously arranging the cushions, only for Sadia to rearrange them moments later, her brow furrowed in mild disapproval. He’d buy her the flowers she adored, only to be met with a sigh and a comment about how the shade of red wasn’t quite as vibrant as he’d promised. These were small things, easily dismissed, yet they accumulated, each a tiny pebble in the shoe of his contentment.
