Kareem traced the worn edges of his prayer beads, the familiar rhythm a soothing balm against the unquiet in his soul. The soft glow of the bedside lamp cast long shadows across their room, a space that had once felt like a sanctuary and now, more often than not, a stage for unspoken anxieties. He loved Sadia, that much was a truth as deep and unwavering as the faith that had guided their union. He loved the way her laughter, when it was genuine, could light up a room, the intelligence that sparkled in her eyes when she was engaged, and the moments, however fleeting, when she looked at him with an uncomplicated affection that mirrored his own. Yet, beneath the surface of their shared life, a subtle dissonance had begun to play, a melody that was growing louder, more insistent.

It had started with the small things, almost imperceptible at first. A sigh when he’d chosen a restaurant she’d deemed too casual, a pointed remark about the way he’d folded the laundry, a subtly dismissive wave of her hand when he’d offered an opinion on a matter she considered her domain. Each instance, on its own, was a minor ripple, easily smoothed over. But the ripples had begun to accumulate, forming a persistent undercurrent that tugged at Kareem’s peace. He’d found himself constantly second-guessing his choices, his words, his very presence. Was the gift he’d chosen for her birthday not extravagant enough? Had he complimented her outfit in a way that was perhaps… insincere? The constant self-examination was exhausting. He remembered their early days, the heady rush of love, the joyous certainty of their Islamic marriage, a bond sealed not just by ceremony but by a profound spiritual connection. He had entered their marriage with an open heart, eager to cherish and protect, to create a haven of happiness for his wife. Now, he felt as though he was perpetually navigating a minefield, each step carefully calculated to avoid an unseen explosion.

His efforts to please Sadia had escalated, morphing from simple gestures of affection into elaborate constructions of an ideal husband, an ideal life, that he felt she demanded. He’d booked a weekend getaway to a spa resort she’d casually mentioned months ago, only to be met with a critique of the room’s view and a complaint about the limited menu. He’d spent hours researching rare ingredients for a dish she’d expressed a fleeting interest in, only for her to declare it “too much effort” when he presented it, her gaze flicking over it with an almost bored indifference. He tried to remind himself of her mother, Mrs. Hassan, that formidable woman whose sharp tongue and exacting standards seemed to have been imprinted onto Sadia’s very being. He’d seen it in the way Sadia would sometimes mirror her mother’s critical pronouncements, her voice taking on a familiar, cutting edge. But he also saw Sadia, the woman he had fallen in love with, and he clung to the hope that the love they shared, the foundation of their faith, would be strong enough to weather these storms. Yet, the question gnawed at him, a persistent whisper in the quiet hours: was he simply not enough?
