Despite the difficulties, glimmers of connection and understanding emerge. Kareem finds small moments where Sadia seems to acknowledge his perspective, offering a fragile hope.
The air in their bedroom, usually thick with the comforting scent of sandalwood and Sadia's favorite jasmine perfume, felt unusually still. Kareem watched her across the expanse of their bed, the faint glow of the bedside lamp casting soft shadows on her face. She was scrolling through her phone, a faint frown etched between her brows. He’d spent the better part of the evening trying to surprise her with a meticulously prepared dinner, a dish from a faraway land she’d once mentioned in passing. He’d practiced the subtle art of its preparation for weeks, poring over recipes, sourcing obscure spices, all to see that spark of genuine delight in her eyes.
And for a fleeting moment, he had. She had smiled, a quick, bright flash, and praised the meal. But then, as always, the tide had shifted. “It’s good, Kareem,” she’d said, her voice a touch too casual, “but the cumin was a little overpowering, don’t you think? My mother always said, ‘less is more with spices.’”
He’d swallowed the small ache that bloomed in his chest. He’d tried to explain that the recipe called for a generous amount, that it was part of the authentic flavor profile. But her gaze had hardened, a familiar glint of impatience in her eyes. “My mother knows best,” she'd stated, as if it were an unassailable truth. And the conversation, like so many before it, had ended there.
