Chapter 5
Silent Nights
The argument leaves Sachi and Christian in a state of emotional turmoil. They retreat into themselves, the usual easy intimacy replaced by a quiet, uncomfortable distance, each wrestling with their own hurt.
The silence in their shared flat, usually a comfortable hum of mutual presence, now felt like a heavy shroud. It had been two days since the argument, two days since words, sharp and unintended, had sliced through the easy rhythm of their days. Sachi, curled on the sofa with a textbook open on her lap, found her eyes tracing the same paragraph over and over, the words blurring into an meaningless jumble. Christian, across the room at the small dining table, was hunched over his laptop, the glow of the screen illuminating the tension etched around his jaw.
The fight had been about something trivial, something Sachi couldn’t even pinpoint now, lost in the fog of hurt feelings and unspoken accusations. It had started with a misplaced scarf, a forgotten dinner reservation, a moment of frustration that had spiraled, fueled by the lingering stress of impending graduation. Sachi, always quick to feel things deeply, had retreated into a childish sulk, her sensitivity prickling at Christian’s usually steady composure. He, in turn, had tried to reason, his mature approach feeling like an accusation to her wounded pride. And then, the words had flown, careless and cutting, leaving them both raw and bruised.
Now, the vibrant energy that usually crackled between them was extinguished, replaced by a palpable, aching distance. Their mornings, once filled with sleepy kisses and shared laughter over coffee, were now a series of polite nods and hurried departures. Their evenings, typically a cocoon of shared intimacy and whispered secrets, were marked by separate activities, the unspoken barrier between them growing higher with each passing hour. Sachi missed the easy way he’d tuck a stray strand of hair behind her ear, the reassuring weight of his arm around her shoulders. Christian, she knew, missed her effervescent joy, the way she’d light up a room with her infectious enthusiasm.
