The air in the cramped attic room was thick with the scent of old paper and Rozay’s own desperation. Dust motes danced in the single shaft of sunlight that pierced the gloom, illuminating the stacks of notebooks that had become his world. Each page was a testament to his unraveling sanity, or so the world insisted. But Rozay knew better. He knew the head wasn’t a figment; it was a phantom, a harbinger, a silent accuser.

He traced the faded ink of his latest entry, the words blurring before his eyes. *“It appeared again today. Near the old oak, where the river bends sharp. Its eyes… they weren’t vacant. They were pleading.”* Pleading. That was the word that clung to him, a persistent burr under the saddle of his sanity. Why pleading? What did it want?

His brother, Aris, had been by yesterday. The usual routine: the patronizing tone, the thinly veiled concern that felt more like an interrogation. “Rozay, you haven’t slept in days. You’re running on fumes. This writing… it’s not helping.”
