Esme watched from the shadowed alcove of the bustling marketplace, her gaze fixed on the scene unfolding near the fountain. “You don’t understand, Kaelen,” Lilith’s voice, usually a silken caress, was now sharp and brittle. “He… he doesn’t see you. Not truly. He’s blind to your brilliance.”
Kaelen shifted, his hands clasped behind his back, a gesture of polite restraint that Esme knew was wearing thin. “Lilith, what are you talking about? Of course, he sees me. We’ve spoken. We’ve shared…” He trailed off, his gaze flickering towards Esme, a subtle acknowledgment that sent a fresh wave of unease through her. He knew she was there. He always knew.
