The air in the jungle hummed with a familiar vibrancy, a symphony of chirps, rustles, and the distant roar of unseen creatures. Leo, his fur still bearing the faint, earthy scent of his long journey, moved through it with a hesitant grace. Each step was a question, each rustle of leaves a potential answer. He was back. The exile, the gnawing ache of absence, had finally receded, replaced by a singular, urgent need: Renee.

He padded through the familiar groves, his senses straining. He remembered the curve of the riverbank where they’d shared sun-drenched afternoons, the gnarled branches of the ancient fig tree that had been their lookout point. But as he drew closer to their old haunts, a subtle shift in the jungle’s song began to prickle his awareness. The vibrant, uninhibited melody he remembered was now underscored by a more cautious, almost mournful, rhythm.

He found their favorite clearing, bathed in dappled sunlight. It was empty. A pang of anxiety, sharp and cold, tightened his chest. He called out, his voice a rumble that echoed through the quiet. "Renee? Renee, it's me, Leo!"
