Chapter 12
Chapter 12: The Signal of Remembrance
Anya wakes to the Stardust drifting quietly toward the ancient beacon, her mind calmed yet curious. Jax and Eliza monitor the signal as Valerius’s steady presence helps anchor her. As they approach, a gentle anomaly affects the crew—Valerius hears an old, familiar melody, and Eliza experiences fragmented memories. Investigating further, Anya discovers the beacon is not a threat but a memory repository, seeded long ago by another explorer seeking redemption. Jax, pressed by the moment, reveals that they once served under the same doomed captain whose mummified remains they now find aboard a derelict ship at the beacon’s location. This shared past changes the trust between Anya and Jax. The chapter ends with Anya retrieving an encoded message meant for future seekers, offering a choice: to remember and learn, or to erase the past. Anya must decide how much of her own past she’s willing to share with her crew and Valerius, knowing the cost of memory and the promise of healing.
I woke to a hush even deeper than the usual pulse of the Stardust’s life-support. For a moment, I simply listened—soothed by the hum, the faint rattle of bulkhead panels, and the almost silent tick of the clock built into my nightstand. The void’s echo had faded further. Instead, a gentle anticipation pressed at the edges of my thoughts.
I sat up. The soft illumination painted everything silver-blue. On the other side of the room, Valerius slept in a tangled sprawl, one hand draped over the side of the cot, the other near the faintly glowing key fragment. It pulsed in time with his breath—a firefly signal, refusing to wink out.
I dressed quietly and padded into the corridor. The subtle vibration of the ship’s drive seemed slower today, as if we were drifting through memory instead of vacuum. On the bridge, Jax and Eliza were already at their stations. They greeted me with nods—Eliza’s quick and bright, Jax’s still groggy and surly from lack of sleep.
