The crimson glow of the gas lamps bled into the velvet dark of my chambers, painting the ornate furniture in hues of dried blood and rose petals. “You are so quiet tonight, Vladislaus,” she murmured, her voice a silken thread weaving through the silence. She turned, her eyes, pools of obsidian reflecting the firelight, met mine. There was no fear in them, only a boundless curiosity, a gentle probing that both soothed and unsettled me.
I rose from my seat, the worn velvet of my coat whispering against the Persian rug.
