The air in the city had grown heavy, thick with unspoken dread. It wasn't just the usual fog that clung to the cobblestones like a shroud, or the persistent drizzle that slicked the gas lamps to a greasy sheen. This was a different kind of darkness, a palpable weight that pressed against my very soul, a chill that seeped not from the damp air, but from the marrow of my ancient bones. Vladislaus felt it too. I saw it in the tightening of his jaw, the flicker of unease in his usually steady gaze, the way his hand would involuntarily clench at his side. He was a creature of the night, born to its embrace, yet this new shadow felt alien, a predator unlike any he had ever hunted.

"It watches," he murmured one evening, his voice a low rumble against the backdrop of the city's perpetual sigh. We were in his study, a sanctuary of dark wood and leather, the scent of old paper and something undeniably wild clinging to the air. The fire cast dancing shadows, but tonight, even its warmth seemed unable to dispel the encroaching gloom. He had been unusually quiet, his gaze fixed on the rain-streaked window, his thoughts a labyrinth I could only glimpse.

"Who watches, Vladislaus?" I asked, my own heart thrumming a nervous rhythm against my ribs. The city, once a place of thrilling mystery and forbidden allure, was beginning to feel like a cage. The shadows that had once beckoned me now seemed to hold a predatory gleam.
