The invitation arrived not by post, but by a whisper of movement in the periphery, a silken rustle that hinted at unseen hands. It was a card, heavy and cream-colored, embossed with a crest I did not recognize but felt, in the marrow of my bones, was ancient. The script, elegant and dark as spilled ink, beckoned me to Vladislaus's home, a place I had only glimpsed from afar, a brooding edifice that seemed to exhale shadows. My heart, that foolish, insistent organ, fluttered with a mixture of dread and exhilaration. The air around him thrummed with an unspoken power, a magnetic pull that drew me closer despite the prickle of unease that traced its way down my spine. His eyes, when they met mine, were pools of obsidian, holding within them the weight of ages. Yet, there was a tenderness in their depths, a flicker of something that mirrored the frantic beating of my own heart.
