The city exhaled a sigh of damp, coal-tinged air, a familiar caress against my skin. Dawn, a pale suggestion of rose and lavender, was beginning to bruise the eastern sky, chasing the deepest indigo from the heavens. Katja stirred beside me, her breath a soft cadence against my chest.
