He had played his gambit, a desperate move to shield us, and for now, the immediate danger had receded, leaving behind a vast, unsettling quiet.
“Vladislaus,” Katja’s voice, soft as the mist clinging to her hair, drew me from the abyss of my thoughts. Her eyes, pools of twilight even in the nascent light, searched mine. There was no fear there, only a profound understanding, a shared acceptance of the precipice upon which we stood. “What now?”
