Chapter 5
A Whisper from the Past
Amidst ancient texts, a forgotten prophecy surfaces, speaking of a path beyond sorrow. It hints at a journey, a confrontation with the very essence of their pain.
The air in the royal library was thick with the dust of ages, each mote a tiny testament to the relentless march of time that Vladislaus and Katja had witnessed, and indeed, outlived. Scrolls, brittle as autumn leaves, lay unfurled on vast oak tables, their ink faded to the colour of dried blood. Centuries of accumulated knowledge, of forgotten lore, of whispered histories, lay dormant here, awaiting a touch, a breath, a desperate need to awaken them. It was a familiar sanctuary, a place where the silent weight of their shared grief could be momentarily outshone by the weight of ink and parchment.
Katja’s fingers, impossibly smooth and cool against the aged vellum, traced the intricate script of a tome that had not been opened in more than a millennium. He sat across from her, his gaze fixed on a point beyond the immediate reality of the room, his thoughts a tempest of fire and shadow. The loss of their children, a wound that had never truly scarred over, festered still, a constant ache beneath the veneer of eternal existence. The black plague, a silent, creeping thief, and the brutal onslaught of the Ottoman Army, a storm of steel and fury, had stolen them, leaving Vladislaus and Katja adrift in a sea of unending night.
“Anything, my love?” Katja’s voice was a soft melody, a balm to his ravaged soul, yet it could not entirely quell the storm within him.
