Chapter 4
Katja's Gentle Hand
Katja sees the storm gathering in Vladislaus's eyes. She seeks to soothe his ancient rage, her touch a balm against the burning embers of his wrath.
The air in their chambers, usually thick with the scent of dried roses and the faint, metallic tang of immortality, now seemed to crackle with an unseen energy. Katja watched Vladislaus from across the vast, shadowed room. The moonlight, a spectral visitor, painted silver streaks across the obsidian of his hair and the sharp planes of his face. His eyes, usually pools of ancient, melancholic contemplation, now held a dangerous flicker, a nascent storm gathering on the horizon of his soul. It was a look she knew, a look that had haunted her dreams for six hundred years, the echo of a fury she desperately sought to quell.
He stood by the immense window, his silhouette a testament to the power and the sorrow that defined him. The intricate carvings of the window frame, depicting scenes of their long-lost kingdom, seemed to mock him with their static beauty, a stark contrast to the tempest raging within. Katja rose, her movements as silent and graceful as a falling petal. Her gown, the colour of twilight, flowed around her, a soft whisper against the polished marble floor. She approached him slowly, her heart a fragile bird fluttering against her ribs. She knew the path he was contemplating, the dark allure of vengeance, the siren song that promised solace in retribution. But she also knew, with a certainty forged in the crucible of shared loss, that such a path led only to deeper shadows, to an endless cycle of pain.
