Chapter 14
The Mirror of Sorrows
The prophecy leads Vladislaus to a magical artifact, a mirror reflecting his deepest fears and the faces of his lost children. He must confront his own despair.
The prophecy, a serpent of forgotten words, had coiled itself around Vladislaus’s soul, its scales shimmering with the faint, spectral light of hope. It spoke not of blood spilled, but of shadows confronted, of inner landscapes charted. Katja, her hand a silken restraint against the tempest in his breast, had traced the ancient runes with a reverence that belied her own gnawing fear. Now, they stood at the precipice of what the Whispering Oracle had termed the “Mirror of Sorrows.”

In the center, upon a pedestal of uncarved, moon-pale stone, rested the artifact. It was a mirror, yes, but unlike any crafted by mortal hands. Its frame was wrought from something that resembled petrified moonlight, intricate and delicate, and the glass itself… the glass was a swirling vortex of twilight, a captured moment between day and night.
Katja’s breath hitched, a soft sound in the vast silence. “It is… as the Oracle described.” Her voice was a low murmur, a prayer against the encroaching dread.
