Chapter 13
Katja's Vigil
Back in the castle, Katja waits, her heart heavy with anticipation and dread. She channels her love and strength, hoping to guide Vladislaus from afar.
The obsidian towers of their ancestral castle pierced the bruised twilight sky, a silent testament to centuries of dominion and shadowed by an even longer reign of sorrow. Within these formidable walls, Katja kept her vigil. The Great Hall, usually alive with the murmur of courtiers and the distant echo of revelry, was now a cavern of hushed anticipation. Moonlight, a spectral visitor, spilled through the immense stained-glass windows, painting fractured mosaics of saints and forgotten kings upon the cold marble floor. Each shard of light seemed to catch a mote of dust, a fleeting ghost of a breath, a silent echo of the laughter that had once filled this space.
Katja sat by the hearth, though no fire blazed. The embers of her grief, however, burned with a relentless, internal heat. Her fingers, long and pale, traced the intricate carvings on the armrest of her throne, her gaze fixed on the massive oak doors that separated her from the world beyond their immediate embrace. Vladislaus was gone. He had ridden out into the encroaching night, a storm of righteous fury coiled within him, a darkness that even the eternal night could not fully contain. She had felt the tremor of it, the raw, untamed power that thrummed beneath his skin, a terrifying counterpoint to the profound tenderness she knew resided there.
She closed her eyes, her breath a soft sigh against the silence. Her love for him was a vast, boundless ocean, and in its depths, she sought to anchor him, to guide him even in his absence. She pictured his face, etched with the ancient pain of their shared loss, the lines of grief deeper than any wound inflicted by mortal blade. She remembered the soft curve of his jaw, the fierce protectiveness in his eyes when he looked at her, the way his touch, even after centuries, could still send a shiver of exquisite longing through her. This love, this fierce, unyielding devotion, was the only shield they had against the abyss.
