The biting wind, a spectral hand, clawed at Vladislaus’s cloak as he traversed the desolate moors. Each gust seemed to carry the phantom cries of his lost children, a symphony of sorrow that had become the marrow of his bones. Six centuries had passed, a tapestry woven with the threads of their laughter, their innocence, their abrupt, brutal silencing. The memory of their small hands, once clasped in his, now felt like ashes slipping through his grasp. Vengeance, a cold, sharp star, had been his sole guide through the suffocating darkness of those years, a promise whispered to the uncaring void. Yet, tonight, beneath a sky bruised with the twilight of a forgotten age, a different kind of chill seeped into his ancient heart.

He had journeyed far, following the fragmented whispers of the Oracle, a being as ancient and inscrutable as the earth itself. The path had been fraught with shadows, not of armies or assassins, but of his own gnawing doubts. Katja’s voice, a silken thread of reason in the tempest of his rage, echoed in the chambers of his mind. “Vengeance,” she had implored, her eyes, twin pools of sorrow and love, fixed upon his, “will it mend what is broken, my love, or shatter what remains?” He had dismissed her fears, blinded by the righteous fire that burned within him, the fire that promised to consume those who had inflicted such irreparable pain. But the fire, he was beginning to understand, had also begun to consume him.

The air here was thick with an unfamiliar stillness, a silence that held no menace, but rather a profound, almost sacred peace. It was a stark contrast to the desolate lands he had traversed, lands still echoing with the phantom clamor of battle and plague. As he stood there, a faint luminescence began to bloom from within the depths of the wood, a gentle, ethereal glow that pulsed with a rhythm as steady as a heartbeat. It was not the harsh glare of retribution, nor the chilling phosphorescence of the damned, but a light that spoke of life, of renewal, of something akin to hope.
