His own logs, fragmented and riddled with the desperate urgency of his final days, were a stark testament to his folly. He’d found them buried, encrypted with a desperate hope that someone, someday, might piece together the narrative of Violetha’s demise.

He remembered the Violethans, their laughter like wind chimes, their eyes bright with a curious innocence. They had greeted him not with suspicion, but with open arms, their initial joy quickly overshadowed by a grave, communal dread. They had shown him the creeping sickness, the pallor on their once vibrant skin, the sluggishness in their movements. And they had pleaded. Oh, how they had pleaded.
